Psychotherapy for young people in Gdańsk – when to seek help?
Growing up is a time of huge change – in the body, in emotions and in relationships. Not every difficult behaviour means there is a problem, but there are signs that should not be played down: persistent sadness, withdrawal from others, falling grades, fits of anger, self-harm, eating disorders or constant anxiety. Teenagers often cannot or do not want to name what they are going through, and parents feel helpless. Psychotherapy gives a young person a safe space where they can be heard without judgement or comparisons.
Working with young people has its own rules. The most important thing is building trust – until a teenager feels that the therapist is on their side, real change is hard to achieve. That is why we do not moralise and do not automatically side with the adults. We use age-appropriate methods, most often cognitive behavioural therapy, elements of DBT (working with emotions and impulses) and the solution-focused approach. We involve parents in the process through consultations, while respecting the teenager's privacy.
Sessions last 50 minutes and usually take place once a week. We see patients in three offices in Gdańsk – in Wrzeszcz on Wajdeloty Street, in Ujeścisko-Łostowice on Bergiela Street and in Ujeścisko on Piekarnicza Street – and online, which many teenagers find less stressful at the start. You do not need a referral or a place on an NFZ (Poland's National Health Fund) waiting list, so help is available quickly. The first step can be a free initial visit – you can come together with your child, or as a parent on your own.
