Psychotherapy in Gdańsk – what is it and who does it help?

Psychotherapy is a structured process of working with a psychotherapist, aimed at understanding and changing the patterns of thinking, feeling and behaviour that cause psychological suffering. Unlike a one-off psychological consultation, psychotherapy consists of regular sessions (usually once a week) that allow for deeper work on yourself.

At the Psychological Centre Sztuka Harmonii in Gdańsk, we offer psychotherapy provided by qualified therapists – psychologists who have completed, or are currently completing, psychotherapy training accredited by the Polish Psychological Association or the Polish Psychiatric Association.

Psychotherapy helps people experiencing depression, anxiety disorders, panic attacks, trauma, relationship difficulties, recurring emotional patterns, personality disorders, occupational burnout, low self-esteem, grief, behavioural addictions and eating disorders.

Frequently asked questions

Psychotherapist in Gdańsk – answers to the most important questions

How does a psychotherapist differ from a psychologist?▼

A psychologist is a person with a university degree in psychology who provides consultations, diagnosis and counselling. A psychotherapist is a specialist (a psychologist or a doctor) who has additionally completed several years of psychotherapy training (usually 4 years) and conducts a structured therapeutic process. At Sztuka Harmonii, we have both psychologists and psychotherapists – we will match you with a specialist who suits your needs.

What therapeutic approaches do you use?▼

Our psychotherapists use a range of scientifically proven approaches: cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic psychotherapy, integrative therapy, schema therapy, ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and SFBT (Solution-Focused Brief Therapy). We choose the approach individually, based on the problem and the client's preferences.

How long does psychotherapy take?▼

The length of psychotherapy depends on the problem and the therapeutic goals. Short-term therapy (e.g. CBT) usually takes 12-20 sessions. Medium-term therapy – from a few months to a year. Deeper psychodynamic work or schema therapy may take a year or longer. Sessions take place once a week and last 50 minutes.

When is it worth seeing a psychotherapist?▼

It is worth considering psychotherapy when: emotional difficulties persist for a long time and do not ease on their own, recurring patterns in relationships cause suffering, you experience depression, anxiety or panic attacks, you cannot regain your balance after a traumatic event, or when you want to understand yourself and your reactions better.

Can a psychotherapist prescribe medication?▼

No – a psychotherapist (unless they are also a psychiatrist) does not prescribe medication. Psychotherapy is based on conversation and therapeutic techniques. If it turns out during therapy that medication would be advisable, the psychotherapist may recommend a psychiatric consultation.

How much does a psychotherapist cost in Gdańsk?▼

An individual psychotherapy session at Sztuka Harmonii costs from 200 PLN (50 minutes). Couples therapy – from 250 PLN (50 minutes). We offer a free initial visit, during which you can meet the therapist and discuss the goals of therapy.
