Youth psychotherapy in Gdynia – when to help a teenager?
Adolescence is a time when a great deal happens at once: pressure at school, comparing themselves to others on social media, first relationships, the search for their own identity, and constant tension between the need for closeness and the need for autonomy. Sometimes it all becomes too much. Signs not to ignore include withdrawal and isolation, outbursts of anger or crying, worse sleep, falling grades, self-harm, fear of school, or talking about themselves in very harsh terms. A teenager will rarely ask for help directly.
We work with young people differently than with adults, and differently than with children. Trust and confidentiality are the foundation – a teenager needs to know that the office is their own space, not an extension of their parents' control. The therapist speaks their language, without judging or moralising. We most often work in the cognitive behavioural (CBT) approach, along with elements of ACT and schema therapy, teaching them to recognise emotions, cope with anxiety and stress, and build healthy relationships. We involve parents as allies, while respecting the teenager's boundaries.
A session lasts 50 minutes and usually takes place once a week or every two weeks. We often start with a consultation with the parent and a separate meeting with the teenager, so both sides know what the collaboration will look like. We see patients at our office in central Gdynia at 10 Lutego 7/103, a few minutes from Gdynia Główna station, with easy access from Witomino, Chylonia, Karwiny or Rumia, as well as online. The first step can be a free initial visit, where we'll calmly discuss the situation.
