A break-up is a loss – and you can go through it more wisely

A break-up or divorce sets off a process very similar to grief: shock, denial, anger, bargaining, sadness. On top of that come things that grief does not involve: the need to stay in contact (especially when you share children), a sense of rejection or guilt, worries about money and the future, and often shame and the question “what is wrong with me?”.

A break-up support group offers a structured space to go through this process: understanding what actually happened (without getting stuck in blame – of yourself or your ex-partner), living through the emotions, rebuilding your self-esteem and gradually building a new chapter. Being with people at different stages of the same journey works like a map: you can see that there really is life further on.

The group is led by a psychotherapist. Membership is fixed and small, and confidentiality applies. The group is not a place for legal advice – we focus on the emotional side of a break-up.

Answers to the most important questions

Quite a lot of time has passed since the break-up, and I’m still struggling with it. Is that normal?▼

Yes – getting over the end of an important relationship can take a long time, and there is no “prescribed” deadline. But if, after many months, the break-up still governs your thoughts and emotions, it is a sign that it is worth going through this process with help – and the group is a very good place for that.

Is the group for people who left, or for those who were left?▼

Both – and that is what makes the group valuable. Loss affects both sides (in different ways: through guilt, relief, regret, rejection), and seeing the “other side’s” perspective in a stranger often helps you understand your own story without going round in circles.

I’m in the middle of a stormy divorce. Is this a good time for a group?▼

Usually yes – the group helps you stay emotionally stable in the middle of the storm and make less impulsive decisions. If the situation is particularly acute (e.g. violence, an intense conflict over the children), during the initial conversation we will decide whether you also need individual support alongside it.
