About this service

Hypnosis is a state of focused, narrowed attention combined with deep relaxation - similar to being absorbed in a book or driving along a familiar route. It is not sleep or a loss of consciousness: the whole time you can hear the therapist, you remember the course of the session and you can stop it. Clinical hypnosis has nothing in common with stage hypnosis: on stage what matters is the effect and susceptible volunteers, in the office what matters is the therapeutic goal, and the induction is slow, calm and agreed with you throughout. Susceptibility to hypnosis is an individual trait - most people reach a state sufficient for the work, for some the effect is weaker, and that is normal. Hypnosis on its own is not treatment; what treats is the therapeutic process in which it is used, which is why we use it as part of hypnotherapy rather than as a separate miracle service. A meeting lasts 90 minutes: a conversation and setting the goal, induction into the hypnotic state, the main work, coming out of it and a debrief. Contraindications include psychotic disorders, acute crisis and some dissociative disorders.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose control under hypnosis?▼

No. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, not sleep or a loss of consciousness. The whole time you can hear the therapist, you remember the course of the session and you can stop it at any moment. Under hypnosis, it is not possible to make someone do something that goes against their values.

Can everyone be hypnotised?▼

Susceptibility to hypnosis is an individual trait and varies from person to person. Most people reach a state sufficient for therapeutic work, but for some the effect is weaker. This is normal and does not mean that something is wrong - in that case we work with other methods.

How is clinical hypnosis different from stage hypnosis?▼

In its purpose and in who takes part. On stage it is about the show, the most susceptible volunteers are chosen and the suggestions are meant to make the audience laugh. In the office, hypnosis is a tool for working on a specific problem, the induction is calm, and we agree the content of the suggestions with you in advance.

What does the hypnotic state feel like?▼

Most people describe it as deep relaxation with very narrowed attention - sounds around you fade into the background, time passes differently, the body feels heavy or, on the contrary, very light. Some people are disappointed that it is nothing spectacular, and that is a good sign: hypnosis is meant to be ordinary and safe.

Can you stay in hypnosis permanently?▼

No. The hypnotic state fades on its own, even if the therapist were to stop talking. Coming out is a planned part of the session and happens gradually, so that you feel fully alert when you leave the office.
