About this service
Hypnotherapy is psychotherapy in which the specialist uses hypnosis as a working tool - not as a separate method of treatment. We start with an interview and setting a goal: what exactly should change and how you will know that it has changed. Only then do we turn to hypnosis, to make it easier to reach entrenched reactions, reduce tension or rehearse a new behaviour in your imagination before you try it in a real situation. The best documented uses are chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety around medical procedures and insomnia; for quitting smoking, stress reduction and phobias the evidence is weaker, although many people benefit. A session lasts 90 minutes because it includes the interview, the induction, the main work and a calm exit from the hypnotic state. The number of meetings depends on the goal: usually a few for a single symptom, more for a broader therapeutic process. We most often combine hypnotherapy with cognitive behavioural work, because what really changes everyday life happens between sessions. Situations in which we do not use hypnotherapy include psychotic disorders and states of acute crisis - in such situations we offer other, appropriate forms of help.

Frequently asked questions
How is hypnotherapy different from regular psychotherapy?▼
They are similar in goal and structure - what differs is the tool. In hypnotherapy, part of the work takes place in a state of focused attention, which for some people makes it quicker to reach automatic reactions. The rest of the process, that is understanding the mechanism and changing behaviour, looks the same as in psychotherapy.
How long is a session and how many meetings are needed?▼
A session lasts 90 minutes. When working on a specific symptom, a few meetings are usually enough; a broader therapeutic process needs more. We set the plan after the first meeting, once we know the goal.
What does hypnotherapy help with most effectively?▼
The strongest evidence concerns chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety around medical procedures and insomnia. For quitting smoking, stress reduction or phobias, hypnotherapy can be helpful, but the evidence is weaker - which is why we treat it as support for the process, not a replacement for therapy.
When is hypnotherapy not advisable?▼
Situations in which we do not use it include psychotic disorders, states of acute crisis and some dissociative disorders. At the first meeting, the specialist checks whether this method is safe and makes sense for you, and if not - tells you plainly what will work better.
Will hypnotherapy replace treatment by a psychiatrist?▼
No. Hypnotherapy does not replace medication or the treatment of a physical illness. It can complement them, for example in work with chronic pain or insomnia, but decisions about medication always remain with the doctor.
