High sensitivity – a burden or a resource?
Around 15-20% of people have a nervous system that processes stimuli more deeply than others: it reacts more strongly to sounds, other people’s emotions, change and time pressure, needs more time to recover, and experiences decisions more intensely. This is high sensory processing sensitivity – an innate temperament trait described by Elaine Aron, not a disorder or “oversensitivity”.
The problem is that the world is rarely designed for highly sensitive people – and years of hearing “don’t overreact” teach you to suppress yourself and to feel ashamed. In the group we work on the practical side of being an HSP: how to manage overstimulation, how to protect your energy, how to set boundaries without a guilty conscience, how to tell intuition from anxiety – and how to use the gifts of sensitivity: empathy, depth, attentiveness to nuance.
The group is a personal growth workshop led by a psychologist. For participants, simply being among people who are wired in a similar way is often their first experience of being “among their own kind”.
What does it look like in practice?
